Painting Series

In October 2020, Dorothy was inspired to begin painting the Unity series, which includes a piece titled “United We Stand,” in response to riots in a divided country that was falling apart. “We need to be more united and more spiritually involved, more caring of each other’s feelings,” Yung said. Her paintings reflect an ideal state where people are gentler, good to each other, changing society for the better. Together we stand, divided we fall, Yung believes.

The Unity series, as do all her series, addresses spiritualism and her belief that a higher power is the source for a kinder, gentler society. Dorothy chose red for the border, pushing upwards toward the sun where she imagines the holy spirit might be, similar to her spiritual piece Enlightenment.

The circles in the series represent this desired smoother world without angles. Each line shaped like an S is people from different kinds of communities coming together in a rounded way, being kinder to each other. The people in the circles are grouped together and hold the same goal – to feel and express more compassion and love toward each other.

This fall and winter, Yung said she will continue her focus on unity. With a new president coming, she anticipates leadership will be kinder to most people and there will be less racism in this country.
In this series, people from different communities, different states come together and move forward in a round circle, following their own hearts. Once unity is achieved, Yung said, the next stage would be euphoria.
